Property Description

The East Cooper Land Trust (ECLT) was awarded $1.34 million to purchase nearly 94 acres known as Thornhill Farm located on Highway 17 North in McClellanville. The property is adjacent to 1,000 acres owned by The Forest Service and The Nature Conservancy. Thornhill Farm has been managed as a teaching farm since 2006 and has been important in the Farm to Table movement in the Charleston area, serving many of the local restaurants. The land trust’s goal is to maintain this valuable resource for the Charleston area and provide a public teaching facility to encourage agricultural practices in our community.

Thornhill Farm is currently a working farm and includes:

  • Areas of forest cover and
  • Various farm related structures.

Historical and current land-management at Thornhill provides an excellent demonstration to both farmers and landowners of innovative production and conservation practices in the Lowcountry including organic production, crop rotation, cover-cropping, pollination habitat, rotational grazing, forage planting, and animal integrated silviculture.
