Brantley Park
Project Description
The City of Charleston purchased this 0.46-acre property in partnership with the Town of James Island. Brantley Park is located at the corner of Folly Road and Brantley Drive on James Island. The property features several majestic Live Oaks situated on a tributary of Ellis Creek, and there is a dock providing visitors access to the creek for fishing and crabbing.
This property was once a part of Rivers Plantation and continued to be farmed after it was purchased in 1948 by Thomas C. Brantley, Jr. and his wife Ruby Williams Brantley. There is a magnificent old Live Oak tree approximately 52” in diameter that provided shelter to farm hands, and thus became known as “the lunch tree”. The park was named “Brantley Park” to honor the family, and there are plans to have interpretative signage detailing the oral history of this land and its features.
The park is open every day from sunrise to sunset.
