Center for Birds of Prey
Project Description
Located along Hwy 17 and Sewee Road in the Town of Awendaw, the Center for Birds of Prey project encompasses a total of 153 acres of diverse land types which has been historically managed for wildlife habitat and outdoor recreational activities. The property is adjacent to five contiguous tracts protected by The Nature Conservancy, which link to the Francis Marion National Forest. This property is home to the Center for Birds of Prey and the Avian Medical/Oiled Bird Treatment Facility, a comprehensive program of medical care, educational outreach, and conservation research. Approximately half of the acreage, The Center for Birds of Prey, is open to the public for guided tours of the wildlife display enclosures and viewing of regularly scheduled flight demonstrations. The remaining acreage, not open to the public, is dedicated to the medical, research and rehabilitation operations of the organization. The uninhabited areas of the property provide habitat for native bird species and allow opportunities to conduct scientific research on these populations.
