Roman Buck Park – Howle Avenue Restoration Site

Park Description

This 3.67 acres was originally a natural pond that was gradually filled in over time with dumped construction waste. The site sits within the central park drainage basin which has faced significant flooding due to increased urban development and limitations in conveyance and outfall systems. The City of Charleston purchased this property in 2021 using Charleston County Greenbelt Funds and restored it in 2025. The restoration includes wetlands and floodplain restoration, meandering stream channel creation, increased flood storage, wildlife habitat enhancement, native vegetation plantings, a passive park accessible to the public, and pedestrian connectivity. The Howle Avenue Restoration Site is a successful example of a nature-based solution within the City of Charleston.
