Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding (CATR)
Project Description
Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding’s (CATR) mission is to improve the lives of children and adults with disabilities as the area’s only nationally accredited therapeutic horseback riding center. CATR offers this beneficial therapeutic opportunity at Brickhouse Equestrian Center, a beautiful facility located at 2669 Hamilton Road in Johns Island, SC. This project protects 37 acres of open space for use as pasture and open fields for therapeutic horseback riding. In addition to the open space, the property contains trails and a 2.5 acre pond that is registered with the Department of Natural Resources as a “Colonial Nesting and Wading Birds Rookery.” According to the staff at CATR, many parents and guardians of CATR students gain respite from the challenges of raising a child with a disability by taking walks on the property, while their children are able to participate in outdoor activities. The property was once part of the historic Brick House Plantation. The Stanyarne Family Graveyard, which is the only reminder of the plantation, is located on the property currently owned by CATR.
